11/12/2003: Article #1: What Are We Doing?
What are we doing here at the Athenaeum? I purchased this piece of Internet real estate in 2000, and for about 3 years, had up a single page on it, informing people that if they were looking for my business, they had come to the right place.
Having what amounted to a billboard that noone sees was not enough of a reason to continue to pay for a website. I was merely sitting in the binary equivalent of a big empty field on my " land " in another reality, and the time has come to develop another patch of it.
My friends, a_wiggins (webmaster of this reality), prof_booty (sonic provocateur), and I, santo26 (psimosaic ecoarchaeologist), have had an informal email group going where we send each other links to wackynews stories and other things that tickled our fancies. After awhile, it became apparent we were doing this because we were a constituency that was not being served by other websites.
The Athenaeum that I have established here at www.athenaverse.com is an honest attempt to see what happens if we make a repository of our writing, rants, ramblings and links to all the news we see fit to post available to the others here in the great ampthitheatre of the Internet.
When I was younger, I wanted to have a 'zine. And now, perhaps, here it is- a space where I have complete editorial control and have a guaranteed circulation of infinity. All we have to do is fill it with quality content- wait and see.
We can't wait to hear what you out there think of this little venture, so keep in touch and tell us what you think.
