Map of part of East Watertown, MA from 1935.

This week's edition of the Watertown (MA) Tab and Press features a column called Sawin's Pond: Past, present and future written by my yours truly. It is my first published column in a real newspaper, and hopefully not the last. This definitely is giving me the confidence to write an actual book about the history of East Watertown. Big ups to all my friends who have been so supportive of my strange obsession with a pond.

This is a choose your own adventure book, and instead of going with your friends to the playground, you decided to go check out the abandoned amusement park. You inspire us all to give into our wacky obessions.

What is the motivation here? I understand that everybody has to be driven by something – but is the end result of this having Sawin's Pond re-named LeBlanc memorial field?

IBNR, you are a Watertown resident and should know that a clean Sawin's pond will benefit not only East Watertown but the whole Charles River basin below it.

I don't know about renaming it LeBlanc Memorial Field, I just got so interested in learning about what happened there that I uncovered a bookload- worth of information. Sick as it may sound, I do this research in my spare time for fun, as it combines my love of Watertown, researching stuff, and urban archaeology.
