A report into the asylum seekers on Nauru recommends they be accepted by New
Zealand as refugees.
The report, commissioned by the Australian federal government, says political
intervention by New Zealand could be their last hope, The Sydney Morning Herald
reported today.
The author of the report, Gholam Aboss, said New Zealand might be the asylum
seekers only chance if the Australian government did not change its immigration
policy.
Ms Aboss, a Sydney-based Afghan community leader, was sent to Nauru last
month to prepare the report by Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone.
He said returning to Afghanistan was not a fair option for the asylum
seekers, who claim to be from the persecuted Hazara community, and that he would
not be recommending it to the government.
The report's release comes amidst a hunger strike by asylum seekers on Nauru.
A total of 284 asylum seekers (including 93 children) whose claims for
refugee status have been rejected by Australia are housed on the island as part
of the Howard government's so-called 'Pacific Solution'.
