Asylum seekers in a detention camp on the Pacific island of Nauru ended a monthlong hunger strike Thursday after Australia said it would review some claims for refugee status.
The 35 mainly Afghan asylum seekers ended their fast after learning that some of their applications would be reviewed, and that an Australian medical team was on its way to treat them, said Geoff Smith, an Australian-based refugee advocate.
"Various refugee advocates were assuring them that things are looking brighter and I think the fact that the medical team is going in has tipped the balance," Smith told The Associated Press.
