Grand Royal Up for Auction
from Nillboard
referred by alert reader Kilik

Defunct Beastie Boys label Grand Royal shut down a few years ago and the catalog is on the auction block. I was on the electronic street team right before they shut down. They had me altering ID3 tags so that when people downloaded .mp3's from me, Winamp would force their browser to Grandroyal.com. I thought it was a great idea, until every time I tried to play one of my .mp3's I had to keep closing my browser window. Perphaps that was a symptom of what they did wrong. With a catalog that included At The Drive In and Lucious Jackson, they shouldnt have lost money.

they were also the us distributors for Atari Teenage Riot. That first album went at least Platinum. How do you lose money on something you didnt even spend any money to produce? look out for the new beastie album to drop this year...

Q: How did Grand Royal lose money and shut down?

A: Financing acts like Butter 08 and Buffalo Daughter. Have you ever heard any of that shit? No, and neither has anyone who isn't friends with Sean Lennon or Mike D.

The problem IMO with Grand Royal is they just put out their friends shit and didn't promote the way they ought to. Luscious Jackson COULD have been a mainstream hit group but by the time they were getting buzz, they had no support and split. I remember they were performing on talk shows and crap...and their stuff was great. DFL wasnt't too bad neither...but how do you promote a punk group called Dead Fucking Live? That shit wouldn't be top 20 at TAANG! records.

I'm looking forward to the new B-boys dropping...but I'm wondering if this is going to be their retirement album. They keep going off on different trips and I'm finding less to love bout them every album.

And on a side note, the article was wrong...Hello Nasty was released in 1998..I remember. I bought that shit in July two days after my 21st birthday. Anyhow...
