01/22/2004: Breaking News Breaking News

A Modest Proposal
by prof_booty

I worry that by electing a Democrat, the United States will break the Boy Scout oath and not leave the place better than we found it, but worse. Whether you agree with the decision to go to war is irrelevant. We are there now and we a have an obligation to Iraqis and ourselves to establish some sort of stability there or it will fester just like when George 41 left the job unfinished.

On the other hand, it is nearly impossible for me to consider voting for a President who calls for a straight marraiage amendment and the re-authorization of the Patriot Act. Here's what I suggest the President do in order to convince people like me that he should be re-elected: Drop Cheney from the ticket and pick Colin Powell to be Vice President. Discuss.

It's funny how often I hear that argument, that "well we shouldn't have gone to war in the first place, but now that we're there let's finish the job". It's a remarkably reasonable position that, for some strange reason, many of the Democratic candidates are rejecting out of hand.

As for the straight marriage amendment, the difficulty is that we've already tied our hands by outlawing things like polygamy. Conservative commentators have a point in that it's silly to argue for an inalienable right of two individuals, whatever their gender, to marry when we expressly and unequivocally forbid it for three or more. The better tack is not to simply "allow" the government to legally recognize a gay marriage, but rather to get it out of the "intimate personal union" business altogether. Though I don't know why gays aren't just getting married as an act of their love for one another and an act of civil disobedience.

As for Cheney, I'd be up for dumping him if for no other reason than it would largely put to rest the Halliburton conspiracy theories. I'd support Colin Powell for veep if he got Samuel L. Jackson to be his national asskicking advisor.

Surprisingly, we all seem to be on the same page on this one. Or at least reading from the same book.

who would've thought I'd be the unifying voice here? follow me to freedom!

I'm following you to freedom? d'oh...I thought we were going to Bickford's.

Same Page? Unified? I'm confused.

The only common thread I'm hearing here is that we all agree that we are in a tough tough position.

I would offer that it is the lack of leadership that has put us as American between Iraq and a hard place.

The logic that Bush screwed up so bad that we need to re-elect him so he can fix this. That doesn't sit well with me.

I will however say that Bush's saving attribute is his decisiveness (whether anyone agrees with him or not) and in this crisis of foriegn policy difficult decision will have to be made whether the Pres be Democrat or Republican.

The 2004 presidential election will be the most important one we have voted in so far. The two previous times I have been eligible to vote I "threw my vote away" by voting for Harry Browne, not because I thought he could win, but more because I couldn't stomach voting for Billy Clint, bobdole, Tipper Whore's husband, or Bush, Jr. This time it is different. Some fucking asshole declared war on the United States and he has blown up two embassies, a Navy ship, and , well, you know the rest. We have been at war with this non- conventional asshat piece of fuck for 10 years now.

Legalized gay marrriage is a great idea, hey do whatever you want I don't care as long as you don't fuck with me has always been my main political principle. But now we have been fucked with in a major way. The usual complaints about social issues how like gay marriage and abortions and flag- burning are not relevant to this election.

Which one of the candidates can get us out of this mess? I do not think Bush, Jr. got us into the 9/11 mess- that has been going on for years, and Iraq too. A third- party vote will not cut it this time, it has to be one or the other. I agree with Bush, Jr. on how he has handled things foreign policy- wise and pretty much disagree with him on everything else. I will give him equal time along with the Democratic nominee, and make my decision November 4th. I hope that the Democrats nominate someone rational because if they nominate that metrosexual peace queer and Bush, Jr. nominates Cizzle Pizzle, well...(did I really just say that?)
