"I'm Buddy Cianci, beeyach!"
The "Andre The Giant Has A Posse" Phenomenon
When I was in high school in the early '90s, the ultimate king of underground stickers and stencils was "Andre The Giant Has A Posse." Started by a RISD student named Shepard Fairey as a thought- control experiment in phenomenology (see his manifesto), these stickers commemorating one of wrestling's greats was all over Boston, Providence, and now, 10 years later, is a huge pop culture icon and his company, Obey Giant is a legit art movement/ merchandise machine. Featured above is one of my favorite ripoff stickers, and here is a gallery of the ones that have been sent in by eagle- eyed posse members.
Hopefully in ten years, we can look back on the humble beginnings of the Athenaeum and wistfully recall the time before we became a pop- cult juggernaut ourselves.
PS- Any of our Athenaeumers with Photoshop- "Athena has a posse?"
