They Set Us Up The Bomb: Bush, Jr. Seeks To Repeal Posse Comitatus Act!
from Reuters
In anticipation of the "oncoming Avian Flu pandemic," Bush, Jr. asked Congress (which is currently controlled by his party) to look into repealing the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which bans the use of the military as a police force inside the United States. During Hurricane Katrina, when the city and local governments failed to respond properly, many critics lashed out at Bush, Jr. for failing to pick up the slack. "Why didn't he send in the military?" they asked. It was against the law to do so. Now, under the cover of protecting us from disease, Bush, Jr. is asking Congress, in essence, to use the military as a police force inside the country. I cannot emphasize enough how much of a bad idea this is. I also do not want to belittle the possibility of a huge pandemic that could kill millions, but you should be careful what you wish for.
